Tupper made it through surgery! 6/10/2008

I Felt Sick For A While...

But Now I'm Shaking It Off!

To all of my angels-
Hey everyone! I had my surgery today!!! I gotta tell ya, it wasn't much of fun, but I made it and they tell me that I'm gonna start feeling a lot better now. I can't believe all you nice people sent money to save me! Wow, I'm one lucky dog... Before I was just a stray who was gonna be put to sleep and now I'm a celebrity with tons of admirers- I must be even cuter than I thought! Well, I'm off to do some more sleeping and recuperating. It'll be a while before I'm back to feeling like a star but thanks to all of you I'm gonna make it and live a long and happy doggie life. I'll let you know how I'm doing, and thanks again for saving me! I love each and every one of you because you loved me enough to save my life...
Love, Tupper

Note from Kitra: Tupper had a close call during his surgery- he stopped breathing but they used the bag to keep oxygen going in and at one point his little heart stopped but they were able to get it going again- the vet said it was pretty scary for a while there, but he's fine now and awake and doing wonderfully! Tupper has pancreatitis and had lots of inflammation in his intestinal tract, stomach and bowels and several dilated, inflamed, fluid-filled areas which were all cleaned out but no intestines had to be removed. Now that we know what's wrong with Tupper they are treating him accordingly and he should be better soon! He may always have to watch his diet but that's okay, I know that whoever his forever family is they will love him enough to keep and eye on what he eats! Thanks so much everyone!!!

Help save Tupper! 6/9/2008

Poor Tupper! Tupper was saved Thursday, June 5th just minutes from being put to sleep at the pound. He was very thin, and was not feeling well. Tupper spent all of Friday at the vet on IV antibiotics and fluids and was also taking anti-emetics and anti-inflammatory medications. He was sent home Friday night with antibiotics but Tupper continued to be sick and still couldn't hold anything down. So, Saturday morning Tupper was rushed to a new vet an hour and a half from the first. He was
immediately put back on IV antibiotics and fluids and will be getting the best vet care possible during his recovery as he fights for his little life. Without this care Tupper would surely have died. Tupper is a 7 lb. chihuahua who has been through so much in his young life (the vet estimated that he is a little under a year to maybe 2 years old).
In just the last week or so he was picked up as an emaciated stray by the police, spent time in the scary pound, and has been sick through it all. He deserves to go on and live a wonderful life where he will be someone's loyal and loving companion! He is just a little sweetie who loves any attention anyone gives him and likes to lay his head in your hand as you rub under his chin or behind his ears. Since we are not a rescue, just a group of people trying to help the animals here on the Lake Traverse Reservation, and have no source of revenue we are hoping that some kind people will help us in our efforts to save Tupper. Please consider donating to help offset the costs of Tupper's
veterinary care. Every little bit helps, so if you can, please help us save Tupper! Thank you so much, and please pass this on to anyone who may be able to help... Going to the link below will take you to our Fundables fundraiser page!

Update on the "porch family"... 6/1/2008

If you don't remember Annabelle and her puppies, the porch family, Annabelle and her newborn babies were found in the box they were dumped in! Annabelle also had to have some reconstructive surgery to repair the damage she incurred when someone cut her during her birthing... But she and the surviving babies are doing great, as evidenced by these photos... Talk about a mini-me!!!

Alexis 6/8/2008

Alexis- what a great dog! She was an owner surrender, because he owners just couldn't take care of her anymore. She came to us with her 4 adorable puppies in tow. Alexis went to rescue and got medical treatment ASAP for her imbedded collar and a uterine infection, among other problems. Her foster mom says that through it all she has been just the sweetest, most loving dog she could have imagined, regardless of the pain she was in. I can't wait to find out Alexis has found her forever family! Good luck, Alexis!!!

Chelsea the shepherd mix puppy... 6/7/2008

Chelsea was saved before she was put to sleep at the city pound. She was fostered by Mel and Gay before going to Happy Tails Rescue to begin her new life. Of course, Chelsea was such a gem that her foster family just couldn't let her go, so they adopted her! Here is the update from her rescue organization:

"Here are some pics of our little Shep puppy. Guess what? You guessed it, she's getting adopted by her foster mom! They are so in love with her and she is doing great with her daughter, and as you can see she's having a
blast in her new home. Thanks for getting her out of there Kitra, and Kristin for helping get her here!  This is the life she deserves, not her past life."

Here are some photos of Sadie, the former stray, and current beloved family member...

Blue

Blue is a dog who was found as a stray out in the country. She was laying next to a horse trailer and even though the owners of the trailer had never seen her before, for some reason she refused to budge. Is it possible that her owners had dumped her there and she was waiting patiently for them to come back for her, stubbornly refusing to believe they wouldn't? Knowing Blue's sweet, gentle, loving and loyal personality it seems pretty likely. Blue went to rescue and of course was spayed right away. Unfortunately Blue had a bad allergic reaction to the anesthesia and was very sick for a while, but she's all better now and has been adopted! Whoever adopted Blue is very lucky, because she is an amazing dog!!! Congratulations Blue, you'll never be alone again...

Penny and kids

Penny, the mother dog who was abandoned with her babies outside with no shelter or anyone to care for them, have a sponsor! Usha of Bloomington, MN is making it possible for Penny to go in for a veterinary checkup, get her vaccinations, get a good dewormer and whatever else she needs. Thanks Usha for helping Penny and her babies, they definitely deserve it!

Here's the update I got on Penny the lab mother and her babies from their wonderful foster mom:

"Mom and babies are settling in beautifully!  Penny is just part of the pack now and enjoying her time away from her babies.  I know it's a real grind for her to be in there constantly, so I let her out for several breaks during the day. She sure is loving all the attention she gets, especially the tummy rubs.  She's very accommodating and goes belly up whenever she wants her tummy rubbed.  That's also an opportunity for me to make sure there's no mastitis developing. I took her to the vet yesterday for a heart worm test and it was negative. She weighed in at 64 pounds and the vet thought she is in very, very good condition considering where she came from.  I also took one baby along and he was equally impressed with him.  I have company almost every day to keep Penny socialized.  Today I will worm the babies and tomorrow another foster mom will come over to help do the paw paintings of them on their little picture frames.  I'll also do one of Penny and her 7 babies footprints.  Should be fun ! !
I'll give those to the people who adopt them.

Jayde, the 3-legged wonder dog!

Jayde, the young female lab mix who went to Pet Haven rescue last week just had a leg amputated! Apparently she had what was probably an old break in her leg bone up by her hip which she had been living with and walking on for months. My guess is that she was also involved in the hit-and-run accident that took her brother Raisin's life (photo below). The fracture was so severe that at any time it could have completely broken through and she would have been running around all alone with no one to help her and one leg literally dangling off the rest of her body! Jayde has been in quite a bit of pain for a long time, and even so she's just as sweet and loving and playful as you can imagine. Several vets were consulted and all agreed that removing the leg would be the best thing for Jayde. Thank goodness for Pet Haven, who took her in and got her all the vet care and love that she will need to heal and get ready to meet her forever family. Knowing how spunky Jayde is she will be just fine with a missing leg. Thanks again Ann and Pet Haven!

(Below is a photo of Raisin. Rest in peace, Raisin...)

Lacey and Jayde- Check This Out!

Check out this great YouTube video of Jayde and Lacey arriving at their rescue, Pet Haven. Three of the Pet Haven folks were there to greet them and one shot some beautiful photos of them, which they made into this wonderful video/ slide-show. Check it out here:
